Wherever the Lord Jesus traveled, whoever He spoke to and all that He taught were done through the leading of the Holy Spirit, giving us much to meditate upon as we follow in His footsteps. Since the people of his hometown of Nazareth rejected Him with violent hatred, the Bible says He could do few miracles there due to their unbelief.
Jesus then chose to base his ministry in Capernaum while frequently visiting other towns and villages around the Sea of Galilee, traveling south to Jerusalem for special occasions, and then back to Galilee again. It was in this northern region of Israel where many of His disciples were called, one of whom was the tax collector, Matthew, who later became the author of the gospel of Matthew. Peter, James, John and Andrew were fishermen on the Sea of Galilee who were also called to leave behind their livelihoods and follow Jesus. Those three years of being mentored by the Lord laid the groundwork for His twelve disciples to become transformed into mighty leaders of the Early Church.
Follow us right up to the edge of the cliff in Nazareth, where the synagogue members tried to throw Jesus to His death. Then on to Capernaum and see the synagogue where Jesus preached and healed. See the ruins of Chorazim, the once prosperous city that Jesus cursed that still lies abandoned and undeveloped until today. We’ll stand outside the ancient city gates of Jerusalem and ponder Jesus’ comparison of rich men to camels going through the eye of a needle. Let’s travel up Mt. Hermon, where Jesus was transfigured and proclaimed His Lordship over all the spiritual forces of evil on the summit of that mountain, where we’ll join in prayer on that sacred spot, the highest peak in all of Israel.
